Documentation of Coursework

This page outlines impactful courses that I have taken throughout my four years at Clemson. This includes courses from both my biological sciences major and my Spanish major.

Language Instructed Courses

SPAN 1010 - SPAN 2020: Elementary and Intermediate Spanish

In these four courses, I was introduced to the basics of the Spanish language and grammar. We focused specifically on reading, writing, vocabulary, and speaking, which allowed me to gain a basic understanding of the Spanish language.

SPAN 3050: Spanish Composition (San Ramón, Costa Rica)

I took this course while studying abroad in San Ramón, Costa Rica. In this course, we focused on writing and worked to improve our writing skills in all different types of writing. We began the semester focusing on writing personal narratives, but by the end of the semester, we focused on essay style writings.

SPAN 3140: Hispanic Linguistics

In this course, we learned about how language, particularly the Spanish language, is structured. We learned about topics such as phonetics, phonology, grammar, and syntax, and their relation with language. This class was especially interesting to me because it blended aspects of my two majors, biological sciences and Spanish, through language and learning how people speak and why people speak the way they do.

Culture and Literature Courses

SPAN 3110: Survey of Spanish-American Literature (San Ramón, Costa Rica)

I took this course while studying abroad, and we read many genres of Latin American literature, from the pre columbian civilizations to present day literature. I enjoyed this class because there we read such a wide variety of literature from different genres, periods, and locations, and this allowed me to gain a better appreciation for all types of literature.

SPAN 4060: Narrative Fiction

In this course, we read many short narrative stories from different authors and genres. Since these were short stories, they often seemed like real life and gave me a picture of what life would look like in different cultures and regions of the world, specifically, in Latin America.

SPAN 4350: Contemporary Hispanic Culture

This course focused on specific aspects of culture in Spain. We read selections from several books and watched movies on similar topics and themes. I enjoyed this class because it allowed me to think critically about each of the selections I was reading and compare the similarities and differences of the stories that were presented.
